We start with the words of Clem Sunter, a former chairman of the Gold and Uranium Division of Anglo American Corporation, who lives in Saxonwold. In his book, What it really takes to be world class, written in 1996, he says:
"I go for early morning walks past the Saxonwold Primary School ... Before the bell goes, the grounds are teeming with little groups of kids at play. What lifts my heart is the scene is totally integrated. Boys and girls, who are black, white, Indian, and coloured mix it up with one another in a totally unselfconscious way. They are really enjoying each other's company ... The school has all the magic of Peter Pan and Christopher Robin ... it is the truest expression of the new South Africa, the one I dreamed about in the apartheid years ... It is up to the next generation to create a properly integrated society. Not because they have to, but because they want to ... I shall continue to walk by Saxonwold Primary and delight in the ray of sunshine it offers me and must offer all the teachers and parents associated with the school." |
